DCD Warns of Severe Dengue Fever Threat

WEB BANGKOK - Thailand's Disease Control Department (DCD) has issued an urgent warning urging people to protect themselves against dengue fever as the country grapples with a severe outbreak amidst the approaching rainy season and El Niño.

Dengue fever, a viral infection transmitted through mosquito bites, poses a significant year-round threat in Thailand, with the risk peaking during the rainy months.

As of 30 April 2024, over 76 million dengue cases had been reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Southeast Asia region alone, with Thailand accounting for a substantial proportion of these cases.

"Dengue is a very serious problem in Thailand," said a spokesperson for the DCD. "Every year, we have almost 100,000 cases reported, and approximately 100 deaths."
